Making a decision is hard enough in life. We all have decisions that haunt us throughout our life. So why is it that we put so much pressure on the banks to make decisions such as 100,000.00 dollar credit line for companies? With the current state of the economy we can see what effects bad loans have on our financial prosperity. Our financial system is flawed according to the government who has been the support for all well know financial institutions. Even with the trap monies banks are hard pressed to loan to businesses or individuals. In this article we will review the process in which business lenders take to approve or decline a deal submitted. Our talks will deal more specific to leasing and financing for businesses within the United States.
Assuming we take each transaction case by case would take us a lifetime to finish this article. Plus that would be boring for our readers. So in brief we have four sources that are the most important to the banks for reviewing any deal. The following sources are Dun & Bradstreet, Paynet, Personal Credit, Business checking account.
First, Dun & Bradstreet is used by banks to show how a company is paying all trades and business loan or lease transactions. The scores range from 0 to 80. Eighty being the best your company can have. The details of the scoring system will not be discussed. The information provided in the report shows the trades and how payment has been received by trades (accounts paid within 30 days). For example: a phone bill that is due within a 30 day period. Obviously each situation is different so businesses might want to touch base with all companies who report to the D&B. The other piece of information shown on the D&B is the pay history on any loan or leases currently or in the past. The amount of the loan or lease is shown on the details section of the report and also the length of time the loan or lease has been activated.
The second part of our discussion involves Paynet which is viewed only by banking institutions. The information shown on that report shows pay history but more in depth for the banks discussions on the deal submitted either by broker or individual. Our knowledge on this subject is limited sense we are not a direct lender and do not have access to the information.
Our third topic is personal credit; we all have encountered personal credit in applying for credit cards, loans, house mortgage, etc. In the business world we still look at the credit of the principals so that we can accurately determine if the company / principal will pay on time to the bank. Our review of the personal credit details how many trade lines the customer has. The banking institutions are looking for a minimum of 5 trade lines that pay reasonably on time. Other information looked at is available credit, this is a percentage which reflects debt to income ratio. Lenders in the lease / finance industry are looking for at least 50% and up. How your available credit is affect within the three scoring agencies. Lenders also look for ownership of a house. The reasoning behind that is to show that the customer is able to pay on a long term debt which is usably larger then credit cards. Last thing lenders are looking for is how many inquires in the past 3 or 6 months have been on your credit. Most customers like to shop around for the best rates possible but that doesn’t mean you have to shop your credit to every lender available.
Our last piece of information reviewed is corporate bank statements for the checking account. The checking account reflects the average balance the business holds in the business checking account. The rule the banks use is the percentage of money in the business account should be approximately 20% of the loan / lease amount asking for.
