PostHeaderIcon Remember the Four R’s For Networking Success

In the early days of education in America, children were taught the “Three R’s:” Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. As business professionals, we also need to learn our R’s if we want to be successful at networking. In today’s time-crunched, capital-starved economy, networking will emerge as one of the most powerful tools in your business development arsenal. When times get tough, the survivors go back to the basics. Building a strong network of mutually beneficial relationships that you can depend on is as basic as it gets.

And yet, networking has been looked down on, discounted, and treated as the domain of pitchmen, MaryKay ladies, and Chamber of Commerce hangers-on. If you want your small business to survive in the future, you’ve got to ignore the sour grapes of the naysayers and develop your own strong and effective networking strategy. It can be as simple as the ABC’s or in this case, the Four R’s: Relationships, Reputation, Resources, and Referrals.

The First R: Relationships

It’s difficult to make time for purposeless activities where we can see no meaning or benefit. Networking is the same; many people believe it is a waste of time or doesn’t work. They don’t see – and therefore don’t have for themselves – a clear purpose. There is only one reason to network: to develop relationships. It is the foundation for achieving any other goal you have for networking.

The relationships that you form will help you in nearly every aspect of your business. These benefits can be easily categorized into the other three R’s of networking: Reputation, Resources, and Referrals, and.

The Second R: Reputation

Why is cold-calling so difficult and inexpensive? Because the people you are calling have no reliable way of knowing whether or not they can trust you. Unless you’ve spent millions of dollars to become a household name, they will be talking to a complete stranger whom they have no way of knowing anything about. Networking is effective in building your business because you develop a reputation before you begin to do business with them. Often, they do business with you because they know you well enough to trust that the product or service you are offering is beneficial too them.

Networking builds your reputation by allowing other people to get to know you and to learn from your actions over a period of time whether they can trust you or not.

The Third R: Resources

When we entered the Information Age, some people thought we’d find that information alone would be valuable. Instead, there is so much of it that it’s sometimes not worth our time to search the usual sources. Those who have powerful networks can simply tap into the expertise of their contact, saving time and avoiding costly errors. Your network can also provide you with contacts and sources of timely knowledge.

You will benefit from the collective wisdom and experience of your network when you develop mutually beneficial and trusting relationships.

The Fourth R: Referrals

Up to 90% of job openings are never publicized. Except for government contracts where they have to publish their request for vendors, very few businesses advertise that they are looking for products and service providers. You’ll find out about the needs that your direct contacts have because you’ll have established your reputation with them. While some dedicated networkers are able to maintain massive, active networks of thousands of people, it’s likely that you have consistent contact with 200 to 300 people. This is not usually enough to sustain your business. You are going to need these contacts to keep you in mind when they are doing business with their 200 to 300 regular contacts. Now your network is closer to 50,000 people. Having a potential client base of 50,000 can be a powerful incentive to network.

Developing a reliable stream of referrals takes time, but once your network has been asked, encouraged, and rewarded for sending their friends, family, and business contacts to you, you’ll find that the process can become a significant part of your business.

Conclusion

You may not have time to go back to school, but you can take a page from the history of education. Apply the four R’s – Relationships, Reputation, Resources, and Referrals – to your business networking strategy and you may become an old-fashioned success story.

One of the most effective ways to to build your business is through the power of networking. As a business owner it makes sense create relationships with other business owners in your area and also in your area of expertise. The more you can help other people build their businesses the more they will want to help you.

Here are some top tips to build your business through networking

1.Your Suppliers

One of the most overlooked areas in networking is your suppliers. All too often we focus on getting the best price and service from our suppliers yet we overlook the fact they probably supply to our target market. Make a point at your next supplier meeting to explore how you could help each other find more customers. This can be a powerful method of building your business through networking and costs next to nothing in terms of time and money.

2.Local Business Breakfast Meetings

If you do a Google search for business breakfast meetings in your area you should find a good supply. These tend to start around 7am and allow you to network with fellow business owners before the start of the normal working day. Before committing to join one make sure you visit all the meetings in your area at least once. You will get a feel for which format and group of people suits your business best.

The key to making breakfast meetings work for you is building relationships and teaching your fellow members about your business. Once you achieve this you will have 20-40 ambassadors building your business using the power of networking form each meeting you attend.

3.Local Chamber of Commerce

Your local chamber of commerce should be a good source of information to help with your networking activities. The reason I put this as third behind suppliers and breakfast meetings is not all chambers are the same. Ask your fellow business owners and suppliers how they find the chamber works for their business. I have found some chambers are very proactive and should be joined as soon as possible, sadly I have also found others to more focussed on corporate members.

4.Local Business Links

As part of any strategy to build your business through networking, making good contacts with your local business links is vital. They are a great source of knowledge in terms of business grants and free training. They also are a great source of knowledge to find the best business networking events in your area.

Building your business through networking is something that must be worked on consistently. Like any marketing effort the results you achieve will be directly proportionate to the effort you put into it. Over time the rewards easily outstrip the effort as you build ambassadors for your business.

PostHeaderIcon Online Network Marketing Business – How to Avoid the Humiliation of Failure

I find it kind of frustrating when I see network marketers trying to market their online network marketing business in the offline world. They do all the traditional methods which their up-line advises them to do. These include making long, stretched out two-three hour presentations to their friends and family as well as calling hundreds of complete strangers with the hopes that maybe a couple will be interested in their online network marketing business opportunity.

These methods have probably worked in the past. There is no other way I can think of for why their up-line would be advising them to do this. Everyone (at least everyone successful) in this industry knows that they will go as their down-line goes. As they succeed, so will you.

So yes, I am sure these methods of lead generation worked in the past. They might still work right now to a certain extent. But the whole idea of making presentations and cold calling seems so inefficient considering their extremely low conversion rates.

Wouldn’t a better use of your time and energy be towards actually mentoring your down-line so that they become very successful producers for you?

This industry is all about leverage. It is not about doing everything 100% yourself. It is about coaching your down-line so that they may be successful, resulting in you profiting from 20% of your work and 80% on the work of others. This may seem like I advising you to take advantage of others. That is absolutely NOT what I am saying. If you are making a solid income from the efforts of your down-line, that means that they themselves are also profiting very well. What I am trying to say is that you should not be trying to go against the make-up of the online network marketing business. This is exactly what you are doing by trying to generate leads in the offline world.

The best thing to do is move all of your lead generation efforts online. This way you will be able to set up multiple campaigns that, after some testing and tweaking, will generate targeted leads for you on auto-pilot. This is a beautiful way to eliminate the grunt work in your business so you can focus on aspects that really matter.

PostHeaderIcon Important – What’s Your Target Market For Business Networking

It’s all well and good going on about business networking and how useful it can be but does it really work?

I have both built successful businesses through networking so my answer would be “YES, it does”!

However, I suspect that not everyone would say that.

Networking is not about randomly turning up at any old event and chatting to a few people. It may appear that way to some people but if that’s all that you do you may find that it doesn’t really work for you.

What you need to do is to decide on your target market and use that information to decide on where the most suitable networking opportunities may be to find them, i.e. where do your target customers ‘hang out’?

When thinking about those people you might find it helpful to imagine one person who would personify your target market to give you a clearer view of where that person might network.

Do they frequent business networking meetings; are they a member of your local chamber of commerce; do they favour networking online; are they members of Rotary or another similar organisation.

If you aren’t looking for business people you might find your prospects dropping their children off at the school gates; up at the golf club, at the gym or in the supermarket. Once you have identified where those people are then you are in a better position to determine a strategy to enable you to network with them.

Having said that don’t forget that you can go to a networking event and meet some business people who aren’t in your target market, but their wives, husbands, family, friends, employees, business associates or even bosses might be and so on.

So you don’t always need to go to the places that your prospects frequent, which is comforting to know especially if there are no obvious options! The secret to this is to ensure that you have a networking strategy that ensures that the people you do meet understand enough about your business and have a clear idea of what sort of referrals you are looking for so that they are able to recommend your services to their contacts.

So, for example, I would say that the target market for our core business where we help business people to network effectively would be people who have recently started a business, or are just about to, or who already have a business but have not done any networking before.

Added to an explanation about the sort of stuff that we do, this should give anyone enough information to refer out business to their contacts.

So, if you haven’t already identified your target market and where they network then now would be a good time to do it!
